Meditation

Half an hour's meditation each day is essential, except when you are busy. Then a full hour is needed.
St Francis de Sales

What is meditation?

I have found that the short definition below is self explanatory and right to the point, as per ATMA website (Australian Teachers of Meditation Association)

“In its broadest and most universal definition, meditation is a discipline that involves turning the mind and attention inward and focusing on a single thought, image, object or feeling. Meditation is sometimes called attention regulation (or attention training). Various meditation practices can be further defined according to the object of meditation, whether the mind is focused on the breath, the mantra, the body, a deity, or an attribute like stillness, peace, love, etc. “

We live in a culture where stress has supplanted happiness as the most common state of mind. The very things that are supposed to save time and give us opportunity to relax and enjoy life are too often the cause of hassle and worry. The abundance of information, including the both paper and electronic mail can be overwhelming .The realization that the Earth’s resources are perilously close to depletion and that population growth is now exponential fills many of us with angst. The response to this situation has largely been one of denial and “business as usual”. Run faster, work harder, distract ourselves with television and movies, take stimulants and follow exercise regiments that are meant to relax us but often feel like one more task to fit into an overflowing schedule.

The simple truth is that we won’t be able to heal the world until we can come to balance within ourselves. We can’t even use our full creative potential or enjoy the blessings of intimate relationships when we are chronically worried and on overload.

The true value of meditation becomes apparent over time, as kindness and caring become second nature. The fruits of practice are much more beneficial than lowered anxiety, better health and enhanced performance. As we learn to let go of the extraneous chatter that clutters our mind, we discover that our true nature-our essential self-is actually a centre of awareness, peace and compassion. Acting with loving kindness toward others becomes our authentic state of being rather than a mere external performance. The Lakota holy man Black Elk said, “There can never be peace between nations until we know the true peace which is in the souls of men. This comes when men realize their oneness with the universe and all its powers, and that the Great Spirit is at its centre; that all things are his works, and that this centre is really everywhere. It is within each of us.”

After all we are “Human Beings” not “Doings”. Relaxation is not something that you do. It is a natural response that you allow to happen. relaxation is what is left when you stop creating tension.

“When the tension melts away, we discover that we are at peace, at the centre and naturally in sympathy with all creation.*

With some many available meditation methods and styles, which one is good for you?

We can find out together what works for you. I facilitate small meditation groups, from beginners to advanced. The power of the meditation circle surpasses mediation in solitude.

You will be introduced to most common meditation styles in the safe and supportive environment.

I will finish this by quoting beautiful words by Mahatma Ghandi

"Be the change you want to see in the world"
